Us

I was very excited when contacted to contribute art to America Scores' "Inspired Art" Auction.  The organization promotes self-expression, teamwork and exercise through a unique combination of soccer and poetry for children.
For this piece, I chose the poem, "Us," written by one of the program's participants as my inspiration. Full poem after the jump!

US
Evelyn S.

We have so much fun.
We go out and run.
She and I go out in the sun.
We just relax and lay down in the field
Before we run.
When we go on a ship we have fun all day.
We use this game back then and figure out how to play another way.
When I leave her house I walk  by myself.
When she  leaves my house I know she walks by herself.
But
We are a tree
Branches stuck together
We have the strongest bond

Re-Sendaked!

Created this piece a few months back for SLJ's Re-Sendakify Sendak Project and am excited it is finally up!

Maurice Sendak and Kevin Henkes were (and are) two of my favorites so I had a lovely time combining them for the 50th anniversary of Where the Wild Things Are.
Hope you like it too!

Creepy bird

Nothing so earth-shattering, but here is this bird:

Not to put too much weight on this little guy, but it got me thinking about a question that comes up a lot for people in the writing and illustrating biz, "What comes first, the words of images?" For me I usually think about both at kind of the same time.  Often it's one image that prompts some words that prompt more images, etc.

I like to get get my brain going by drawing an image, then describing it.  Sometimes it stays in the sketchbook, other times it becomes an entire book or iPhone case

Excuse the shameless plug and have a good holiday!
